TOWN OF LOCKPORT – A man seeking to be paid for providing advertising services was instead bilked out of $4,445, Niagara County sheriff's deputies said.
The victim, a Dysinger Road resident, told deputies last week that he had responded to an "advertising opportunity" he found listed on the Internet site Craigslist. The listing offered pay in return for individuals hosting advertising for various national chain outlets.
The catch: the job seeker first had to send money to the companies. The victim said that he sent $2,000 via MoneyGram to a person at a Texas Walmart. He then forwarded an additional $2,445 worth of iTunes gift cards to a different address, before eventually realizing that the opportunity was not legitimate.
Police advised him to see if the charges could be reversed or canceled. An investigation into the incident is continuing.
