Amherst will start year-long celebration of its bicentennial Jan. 2

Amherst kicks off celebrations of its 200 years as an incorporated town with a birthday cake and greetings 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Amherst Town Hall on Main Street.

The kickoff celebration will include gigantic birthday cake and proclamations from elected officials and municipalities throughout the world. Bicentennial Co-Chairs Herbert Schmidt and Dave Sherman will offer greetings.

It is the goal of the Bicentennial Commission to present the Amherst Town Board with 200 proclamations and/or greetings to help celebrate the town's 200 years and to applaud its distinguished history.

The town already received close to 200 proclamations including proclamations from municipalities that share the same name like Amherst, Nova Scotia; Amherst, Wisconsin and Amherst, Ohio.

The Town of Amherst will mark its 200th anniversary with a series of celebrations throughout its bicentennial year, including later events such as a parade, historic walking tours, a slogan contest, and a Bicentennial Ball.
