The George F. Lamm American Legion Post No. 622 in Amherst wants to install a digital message board on its property to promote its bingo-game fundraisers and to display ads from outside businesses.
Post officials say installing the 13-foot-high sign would offset flagging membership and declining revenues from the bingo games for the organization at 962 Wehrle Drive. The post has a manually operated sign now.
The 408-member post needs permission from the town's Zoning Board of Appeals because the sign would be within 500 feet of a residence and carry outside ads. Santoro Signs would build the $25,000 sign.
The Zoning Board – minus Chair John Radens, who recused himself as a post member – tabled the item at its Dec. 19 meeting to give post officials a chance to consult the immediate neighbors.
