When it comes time for college football's bowl season, scouts can't just waltz into any game they choose. NFL teams can only get credentialed for five of the 40 bowl games, Bills general manager Brandon Beane told The News' Jay Skurski this week.
“You don't get the same access that you would in season,” Beane said. “Basically, they divide the bowls into an ‘A’ category, ‘B’ category and ‘C’ category. You might get two As, one B, and two Cs. You'll get two of two of them, and one of the other.”
If there's a player you want to see and you don't get his game, you can always call up a team that was given that bowl and trade with them, Beane said, adding that the Bills had made one such trade this year.
Also of note: Beane referred to pro days as "the underwear Olympics." That's gold.
Kelvin Benjamin is hobbled, but still fighting to have an impact: When Beane traded for Benjamin, he expected the Bills to have a shot at the playoffs, and they do. This is Benjamin's time to shine, but he'll have to do it on a gimpy leg. "I know they brought me in to play a role on the team," Benjamin told Jerry Sullivan. "I'm just trying to do that, trying to fulfill my role, be a great teammate, to get more comfortable with the organization and let the organization get more comfortable with me, let them know I'm not a quitter. I'm a fighter. I'm going to push."
Rooting guide: The Ravens beat the Colts Saturday in the biggest out-of-town game the Bills were watching this week, but there are four more games Sunday that can impact the Bills' playoff chances.
Mike Gillislee's grudge game more about Belichick than Bills: The loss of backup running back Mike Gillislee hasn't hurt as much as expected, Tim Graham wrote. Gillislee has been inactive for several weeks but is expected to play against the Bills with Rex Burkhead out.
Colton Schmidt is getting it done: The Bills' punter is having a strong season, coming up clutch for field position-minded Bills.
Kids write thank-yous to Eric Wood for shopping spree: Bills center Eric Wood recently took kids on a shopping spree before Christmas. Here are their heartfelt letters of gratitude.
