Weather-related power outages hit Orchard Park and Hamburg, including McKinley Mall area

Power outages affected nearly 1,000 customers of New York State Electric & Gas, including the McKinley Mall area Saturday night.

But last-minute shoppers got back to business after power was restored about 8:45 p.m. to the shopping center along McKinley Parkway.

NYSEG spokeswoman Rachel Buchanan said power is up and running at the mall, where heavy and wet snow had caused the outage earlier in the evening.

The area between Tops at Route 20 and Route 179 was the site of the widespread power outage by the mall, according to Hamburg Police.

A spokeswoman for NYSEG said there is no single cause for the power outages in Hamburg, where 232 customers were reported without power, and Orchard Park, where 710 customers were in the dark. Weather is the main factor, with cars hitting utility poles, and general heavy, wet snow accounting for some of the outages, she said.
