A senior citizen was fleeced out of $4,000 when told that his granddaughter was in a car accident while on her cell phone and the vehicle she struck had no insurance and she needed $4,000 to be released from custody, according to the City of Tonawanda Police Department.
The victim told officers he received the call and was instructed to get four $1,000 gift cards from Sam’s Club and call back. The senior complied, called the number back and furnished the numbers on the card and PIN. A short time later, the senior called Tonawanda police.
When detectives tried to follow up, they found the cell phone was already out of service
City of Tonawanda police said the senior should have contacted other family members or police before completing the transaction.
