Any Erie County residents who want to apply for a new pistol permit need to schedule an appointment with the Erie County Clerk's Office, not just drop in.
Clerk Michael P. Kearns announced that because of the recertification requirements under the New York State SAFE Act, the Clerk's Office has experienced higher-than-usual traffic. The state law requires that anyone who gained their pistol permit prior to Jan. 15, 2013 must recertify their weapons with State Police.
In order to cut waiting times for permit holders needing to make quick transactions and modifications to their permits, starting Tuesday anyone needing to apply for a new pistol permit must call ahead and make an appointment. They should not come down to the Clerk’s Office until they are scheduled to do so. The new policy will apply through January.
