The Erie County Legislature said farewell to veteran Democratic Legislator Betty Jean Grant at the last Erie County Legislature session of the year. Democrats will assume control of the Republican-controlled Legislature in in January.
The Legislature thanked Grant, D-Buffalo, for her 18 years of public service, including 10 years of service as a county legislator and prior years as a Buffalo Common Council member and member of the Buffalo school board. She is being honored for her "track record of accomplishment" and being "an undisputed champion of Buffalo."
The Legislature was expected to vote on a law making it illegal to smoke in or near a bus shelter, but that measure was sent to committee, as was another proposal that would make people convicted of certain felony crimes ineligible to be elected or appointed to county positions.
