The West River Parkway trail along the Niagara River in Grand Island remains on schedule with plans to close the service road and begin construction in the spring.
The 8-mile recreation trail along the Niagara River will connect Beaver Island and Buckhorn state parks. The project is funded by federal and Greenway grants.
The LiRo Group of Buffalo is the project manager to oversee the $2 million project. Bids to appoint a contractor, due by Jan. 11.
Paul Leuchner, chairman of the Grand Island parks and recreation advisory committee and a former citizen commissioner of the Niagara Greenway said concerns that state parks will not maintain the trail or fully complete the amenities are unfounded.
"This trail is one the crown jewels of the Niagara Greenway," said Leuchner. "You can't get any closer to the Niagara River."
