Illinois man charged after trying to enter Canada with stolen gun

An Illinois man was arrested at the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls on Monday night on charges he possessed a stolen handgun, according to a Niagara Falls police report.

Sean T. Schmidt, 47, of Carbondale, Ill., had been attempting to enter Canada but was turned around by customs officials for possessing a stolen gun. Canadian authorities contacted U.S. Customs and Border Protection who took Schmidt into custody and contacted city police, according to police.

Niagara Falls police charged Schmidt with criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the report.
