In September, celebrity vocal coach Andy Anselmo gave $500,000 to Canterbury Woods, the Amherst retirement community where he lives. The gift was a pledge toward a new arts center on the campus.
Now, with Christmas in the air, Anselmo is announcing a new gift. He is pledging an additional $200,000. This new bequest will help fund a residency in the arts center by the edgy local dance company LehrerDance.
The venue, to be called the Andy Anselmo Performing Arts Center, is estimated to cost $3.5 million. It is scheduled for completion in 2020.
Anselmo, 93, is famous for having coached such stars as Mandy Patinkin and Liza Minnelli. He is the founder of the Singers Forum, a prominent school in New York City now approaching its 40th anniversary. He has lived at Canterbury Woods since 2006.
The new partnership with LehrerDance was announced at a Dec. 20 ceremony on the Canterbury Woods Williamsville campus on Renaissance Drive.
