The chairman of the Amherst Republican Committee is resigning Dec. 31 after five years in the role, the party announced Wednesday.
Carl Balmas on Jan. 1 will assume a new role with the Erie County Republican Committee as vice chairman for towns, according to a news release. Balmas, an Army veteran, was first elected chairman of the town committee in 2012.
Joe Heins, the Amherst Republican Committee's first vice chair, will take over the chairman duties.
“The time is right to pass the baton to a younger generation to lead our town party into the future," Balmas said in a statement.
The move comes after Republican candidates failed to win any of the three townwide offices on Election Day. Democrats will have total control of the five-member Town Board in 2018 for the first time in recent memory.
