State trooper from West Seneca seriously injured by motorist on Long Island

The state trooper seriously injured Monday on Long Island when he was struck by a vehicle while assisting a stranded motorist is from West Seneca.

Trooper Joseph J. Gallagher, 35, was critically injured when he was hit by a vehicle Monday afternoon. His condition after surgery was upgraded to serious, the State Police said.

Gallagher was struck at about 2:30 p.m. on an overpass from the Long Island Expressway to Sagtikos Parkway in the town of Commack, Suffolk County. Gallagher is assigned to Troop L, the division of the State Police that covers Long Island. He has been a trooper since 2014, police said.

Gallagher was in serious condition at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, police said.

The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and no charges had been filed as of Monday.
