Sister Rita Barrett, an elementary grade teacher in Catholic schools, died Sunday in the Sisters of St. Joseph Residence, Clarence. She was 91.
Born in Scranton, Pa., she worked at Our Lady of Victory Infant Home before entering the Sisters of St. Joseph in September 1948. She professed her final vows in August 1954 and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Medaille College in 1968.
She taught in Catholic schools in Buffalo, North Tonawanda, East Aurora and Dunkirk. She was a librarian and reading coordinator at St. Matthew’s School from 1979 to 1984.
She was particularly devoted to children with special needs and their families.
After she moved to the Sisters Residence in Clarence in 1991, she served as a driver and receptionist, shopped for the other sisters and knitted items for babies.
Survivors include a sister, Marceline Dunn; a brother, Gene; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Sisters of St. Joseph Residence, 4975 Strickler Road, Clarence.
