As keyboardist with Buffalo's Intrepid Travelers, Donny Frauenhofer has been navigating a rapid trajectory, moving from tentative beginnings on the local club scene to festivals and a serious buzz on the Northeast jam band circuit in a matter of a few years. Intrepid Travelers became very good very quickly, so it's no surprise that Frauenhofer is a young musician eager to immerse himself in as many different musical environments as possible. When the I.T. gang is off the road, he leads his own jazz trio, as well as a band that operates beneath his own imprimatur, with a rotating cast of the area's most distinguished musical characters.
Now, Frauenhofer has assembled an all-star lineup of his band to celebrate the enduring genius of the late, great American composer Frank Zappa. “Censored by ZFT: A Tribute to Frank Zappa” - its title a nod to Zappa progeny Dweezil's legal struggles with the Zappa Family Trust overseen by his brother Ahmet – finds Frauenhofer joined by seven of the finest young musicians in town. The band will play two sets, concentrating on material from Zappa's fertile early '70s period.
"Censored by ZFT: A Tribute to Frank Zappa": 10 p.m. Dec. 22 at Nietzsche's (248 Allen St.); $5 at the door.
