John J. Mattio, an attorney and longtime Wheatfield town justice, died Thursday in Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He was 73.
Born in Niagara Falls, he attended Bishop Duffy High School and was a 1969 graduate of the University at Buffalo Law School.
He started his career as a public defender after serving in the Army during the Vietnam War, then worked in a law office with Anthony Certo.
Mr. Mattio practiced law in the Niagara Falls area for 40 years and was a member of the Erie County and Niagara Falls bar associations.
A Wheatfield resident since 1990, he was appointed Wheatfield town justice in June 2000 after serving for two years as town prosecutor. He won election later that year and had been re-elected four times.
He enjoyed golfing, cooking and family gatherings.
His wife of 36 years, the former Barbara E. Merritt, died in 2012.
Survivors include three daughters, Stephanie Mattio Ventry, Chavonne and Diana Corra Giarrizzo; and five grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon Wednesday, Dec. 20 in the St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Parish, St. Leo’s Church Site, 2748 Military Road, Niagara Falls.
