Police grow goatees to raise money for food pantry

Usually cleanshaven City of Tonawanda police officers grew goatees this past month for a good cause.

Their efforts raised a total of $725, which was donated by the police officers' union to the Vietnam Veteran Chapter 77 food pantry.

This year's folic fundraiser follows the union's "beards for bucks" fundraiser from last year, which raised over $8,000 to help pay for 3-year-old Ethan Ashcroft, who has mitochondrial disease, to undergo genetic testing and travel to Atlanta to see a specialist for the chronic and incurable condition. Ethan is the grandson of Detective Frank Scarpena.

Cops also got hairy two years ago and raised $1,500 to help pay for household expenses and medical costs for Kim Vaillancourt, a mother diagnosed with cancer.
