Niagara Falls man faces prison for injuring trooper after drug bust

Ronald J. Bennett of Niagara Falls pleaded guilty Monday to injuring a state trooper in a fight after he was arrested for cocaine possession.

Niagara County Assistant District Attorney Peter M. Wydysh said a trooper suffered a dislocated shoulder when Bennett fell on him during the Feb. 26 fracas on Eighth Street in the Falls.

Bennett, 37, of Nevada Avenue, admitted to second-degree assault and attempted third-degree possession of a controlled substance. Police found 1.38 ounces of cocaine in his vehicle after a traffic stop. He also forfeited $3,622 he had in his pocket.

Judge Matthew J. Murphy III told Bennett, a second-time felon, that he will go to prison for up to eight years when he returns to court Jan. 29. For now, he's free on a $10,000 bail bond.
