Hortense Marie Hilliard, of Buffalo, active in the Humboldt Parkway Baptist Church, died Oct. 31 in Garden Gate Health Care Facility, Cheektowaga, after a lengthy illness. She was 80.
Born in Buffalo, the youngest of seven children, she attended School 32 and was a 1955 graduate of East High School. She later earned an associate’s degree from Medaille College.
She began working at Kobacker’s department store as an elevator operator, then served for many years as a dental assistant with the Erie County Health Department. She retired in 2000.
As a girl, Ms. Hilliard was active in Pilgrim Baptist Church in the Youth Choir, Senior Choir, Gospel Chorus, Youth Usher Board and the Sunday school.
For the past 36 years, she was associated with Humboldt Parkway Baptist Church, under the leadership of her brother, the Rev. John T. Hilliard. She was president of the Missionary Society, superintendent and a teacher in the Sunday school and a singer in the Senior Choir and the Mass Choir. She also served on the pastor’s aid committee and the aid guild.
Through the church’s membership in the Great Lakes Missionary Association, she was president of the association’s former Women’s Auxiliary, now the Women’s Ministry.
In addition to her brother, survivors include a daughter, Rae-Myra; two sisters, Armatine Ogleton and Yvonne; and two special nieces, Deborah and Gila Jones.
A celebration of her life will be held at noon Jan. 13 in Humboldt Parkway Baptist Church, 790 Humboldt Parkway.
