Bail set at $200,000 in Lockport arson case

Bail was set at $200,000 Wednesday for a man who was extradited from Alabama in connection with a fire at his boyfriend's Lockport apartment.

Alex D. Brown, 37, of Rochester, pleaded not guilty in Niagara County Court to second-degree arson and obstructing governmental administration.

Assistant District Attorney Cheryl L. Grundy said Brown was in an argument at the South Bristol Avenue apartment June 13 and refused to leave. When the boyfriend and his aunt went to the police station to talk to officers, Brown allegedly locked himself in the apartment and started a fire. The fire did $38,000 damage to the two-unit dwelling.

Police evacuated the other apartment and subdued Brown with a Taser, but he left the area after hospital treatment and before he could be arrested, Grundy said.
