Thomas J. Santa Lucia, of Williamsville, a legislative aide, died Friday in Erie County Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 57.
Born in Buffalo, he was a cum laude graduate from Calasanctius Preparatory School, where he earned the Harvard Book Club Award as an outstanding student. He graduated magna cum laude from the University at Buffalo with a bachelor’s degree in contemporary English and creative writing and earned a master’s degree from UB.
After college, Mr. Santa Lucia struggled with physical and mental illness, but was able to work as an aide for his uncle, Rep. Henry Nowak, for the Erie County Legislature and for the Erie County Board of Elections.
He was especially close to his aunt, Rose Nowak, with whom he frequently dined and visited bookstores. He took part in writing workshops and was a Literacy Volunteer tutor.
Survivors include his parents, Thomas and Dolores; two brothers, Robert and John; and a sister, Lynn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 200 St. Gregory Court at Maple Road, Amherst.
