Lifesaving efforts recognized by the Town of Tonawanda

The Tonawanda Town Board has recognized more than a dozen officers, firefighters, paramedics and dispatchers for their work to save two people trapped in a fire at 22 Glenside Ave. on the afternoon of Oct. 23.

Shantel Martin, 25, was treated for smoke inhalation and released. Her grandfather, Harold Roberts, 80, remains hospitalized in the Erie County Medical Center burn unit.

Officers Mark Muscoreil, Joe Milosich and Kelly Wright arrived at the working fire with Martin screaming for help from the second floor and all the doors locked. They were able to breach the door, and Brighton Fire Chief Andy Hallnan arrived and rescued Martin and then her grandfather. They received assistance from Brighton 2nd Fire Chief Steve Dabney and Fire Capt. Kurt Mommertz, who helped to pull the burned, unconscious man out of the house.

Town Supervisor Joseph Emminger called the rescue a "team effort" with backup from several fire companies, dispatchers and paramedics.
