Niagara nabs national hockey ranking for first time in four years

Niagara jumped into the Top 20 of the latest men's hockey poll on Monday.

The Purple Eagles took over No. 20 after sweeping Air Force in Colorado this past weekend. At 9-5-1 overall, Niagara also is in first place in Atlantic Hockey with an 8-2-1 league mark.

It's the first time the Purps have been ranked since October 2013, when they started the 2013-14 season ranked No. 20 coming off an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament in 2012-13.

Niagara is one point ahead of Canisius in Atlantic Hockey and the two teams will square off this weekend in a home-and-home series.

The Golden Griffins are also in the a national poll, among those receiving votes with five points. Canisius is 8-5-1 overall and 8-4-0 in league play.

The teams play in Dwyer Arena at 7:05 p.m. Friday then in HarborCenter at 4:35 p.m. Saturday.
