Families are invited to start the New Year with the free Christmas Bird Count for Kids starting at 9 a.m. Jan. 6 at Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve in the Town of Cheektowaga.
The event, sponsored by the state Department of Environmental Conservation and Reinstein Woods, offers children ages 8-16 and their adult companions a chance to see who can find the most birds during 90-minute hikes. Refreshments will follow.
Before the hike, children can take advantage of “Binocular Boot Camp” to learn basic bird identification and binocular skills before splitting into small teams for the hike. The bird counts are reminiscent of the Audubon Christmas Bird Count, a century-old citizen science program that collects information about birds. The event is part of I BIRD NY, an initiative to promote low-cost opportunities to connect with nature.
Reinstein Woods Environmental Education Center is located at 93 Honorine Drive in Depew. Register online, or by phone at (716) 683-5959.
