African-American veterans monument rights a wrong
Two letters in the Nov. 26 edition of Everybody’s Column, essentially raised opposition to the monument slated to solely honor African-American veterans at the Buffalo Naval and Military Park.
It will be a testament to their service spanning all military branches and every conflict since our nation’s birth.
One writer stated it would look like segregation pure and simple. The other surmised it would be a “continuous visual message of ‘equal but separate.’ ”
Since 2013, the naval park rightfully includes the Buffalo-Hispanic Veterans Memorial, which commemorates all Hispanic American veterans, past, present and future.
Neither monument would be necessary if those participants’ commendable deeds were not historically ignored.
