Cheektowaga officials have approved the expansion of an adult-care facility on Old Union Road.
The DePaul Group, located at 2224, 2228 and 2240 Old Union, will construct two three-story, 40-unit apartment buildings and a two-story, 15-unit addition to an existing building, said Daniel J. Ulatowski, Cheektowaga town planner. The project also calls for the demolition of a one-story administrative office building operated by DePaul at 2240 Old Union and an office warehouse at 2228 Old Union, said Ulatowski.
The Town Board approved DePaul Properties' site plan and a rezoning of the parcel at its meeting Tuesday night.
The DePaul Group serves senior citizens, the hearing impaired and people living with psychiatric disabilities and dementia.
It currently has at the site a 15-unit, two-story building that houses 30 mental-health clients and a 120-unit assisted-living facility for seniors, said Christopher Syracuse, executive director and vice president of Living Opportunities of DePaul.
"We would like to start construction in the latter part of spring 2018," said Syracuse. "Once we do, we expect a 13-month timeline. We always include a lot of green space and trees on our campuses. We want to fit into the character of the neighborhood."
More than half of the 80 new apartments to be built on the south side of the campus are already leased, said Syracuse. The rest will be open to members of the general community who meet income guidelines.
The 24-person administrative staff will be moved to rented facilities at 2475 George Urban Blvd. in Depew, said Syracuse.
