Until very recently, the term "rape culture" carried little weight in popular culture. It was often dismissed by male pundits or ridiculed as the incendiary overreaction of a feminist elite.
But then came Harvey Weinstein. Then came Kevin Spacey. Then came Charlie Rose.
And now comes New York City-based performer Asia Gagnon, who will present her performance "The Kind of Thing You Don't Talk About" from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 in the Adam Mickiewicz Dramatic Circle and Library in a production presented by Torn Space Theater.
A release from Torn Space describes the show as "a high-speed multimedia ride through Gagnon's narrative, her voice and a tricked out side-table being the only constants as she navigates disturbing content on the sails of oddball cultural immersions." It is inspired in part by the recent #MeToo social media campaign, which saw millions of women sharing personal experiences with sexual violence and harassment that they had long kept secret.
The production will feature video design by Max Bernstein of the Wooster Group, the New York City-based experimental theater company in residence at the University at Buffalo.
"The Kind of Thing You Don't Talk About": Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 in the Adam Mickiewicz Dramatic Circle and Library, 612 Fillmore Ave. Tickets are $15 to $20. Call 812-5733 or visit tornspacetheater.com.
