Niagara County lawmaker pushes EPA to check out smelly landfill

A Niagara County legislator said Monday that a giant garbage landfill beside Interstate 190 in the Town of Niagara continues to emit unpleasant odors despite a state fine against the landfill's owner last month.

Legislator Jason A. Zona, D-Niagara Falls, said he will offer a resolution at next week's Legislature meeting, asking the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to investigate the sulfur odor.

In October, the state Department of Environmental Conservation fined Allied Waste $75,000 and ordered the company to take steps to quell the smell. But Zona said that hasn't happened.

"The residents of the Town of Niagara have had enough," said Zona, whose district includes the town. "They’ve been looking for answers and solutions for nearly a year now."
