FEMA sets open house in Lackawanna on flood plain remap

Property owners in Lackawanna concerned over the revised flood maps recently released by the Federal Emergency Management Agency may attend an informational meeting from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Lackawanna Senior Center, 230 Martin Road.

The revised maps removed 550 Lackawanna houses from the flood plain, but added 10 homes on or near Sharon Drive into the flood plain.

The remap targeted areas along Smoke Creek starting from Lake Erie and ending at the New York State Thruway for both the north and south branches. The maps are effective May 2, 2018.

Representatives from the state Department of Environmental Conservation and FEMA will address concerns on how floodplain changes impact insurance requirements and costs. Attendees should bring a copy of their elevation certificate and flood insurance policy.

Residents may access additional information on mapping as well as the Letter of Map Revision documents that detail the changes.
