TIMELY TOPIC – “Presidents and the Press” is the theme of a panel discussion at 6 p.m. next Wednesday in the Buffalo History Museum, One Museum Court at Elmwood Avenue and Nottingham Court. Moderator is author and Pulitzer Gold Medal winner Rose Ciotta. It’s free and open to the public.
Panelists include Jody Kleinberg Biehl, director of the journalism program at the University at Buffalo; Lee Coppola, former dean of the School of Journalism at St. Bonaventure University; Jay Wendland, assistant political science professor at Daemen College; and award-winning Buffalo News reporters Dan Herbeck and Robert McCarthy.

SLAM DUNK – Varsity and junior varsity teams from Frontier, Hamburg, Lackawanna and Lake Shore high schools will compete in the Town of Hamburg Lions Club’s 19th annual Tip Off Basketball Tournament next week at Frontier Central High School, 4432 Bayview Road, Hamburg.
Four days of play begin with varsity teams at 6 p.m. next Tuesday and conclude with a championship game at 6 p.m. Dec. 1. Proceeds will support college scholarships for local high school students. For more info, call Jim Baker at 826-1922.

SPIRIT OF GIVING – Tony Rome’s Globe Hotel, 711 Main St., East Aurora, will host its 12th annual party at 6 p.m. next Thursday for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program and FISH of East Aurora, a Christian group which helps the needy. Admission is a new toy or monetary donation. There will be drink specials, a free buffet, raffles and drawings. The restaurant also will be collecting donations of toys and warm clothing for the needy through Christmas Eve. For more info, call 652-4221.

TAKE AN OAR – The Buffalo Scholastic Rowing Association has established a new team for high school boys who are attending a school that does not have a rowing program. No experience is required to join Team BSRA and there will be no cuts. Athletes of all sizes are welcome. Dues are $200, plus a $125 regatta fee.
Informational meetings will be held at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 13 and 10 a.m. Jan. 6 in the Old First Ward Community Center, 62 Republic St. Winter crew practice starts at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 9 in the Community Center.
