Howard officially wins Erie County sheriff election

Erie County Board of Elections officials have declared incumbent Timothy B. Howard the official winner of the election for sheriff following a count of outstanding absentee ballots.

Board spokesman Mario Alaimo said the absentee ballot count that caused Democratic challenger Bernard A. Tolbert to delay an official concession resulted in a net increase of about 300 votes for Howard.

“It’s not enough for Mr. Tolbert to overtake,” he said of the margin.

Combined with the unofficial tally of the machine vote, Alaimo said Howard now leads 110,585 to 106,898 with fewer than 1,000 outstanding affidavit and emergency ballots still to be counted.
