Town of Niagara man admits striking girlfriend with baseball bats

A man who struck the mother of his children with two baseball bats May 26 accepted a plea offer Monday in State Supreme Court.

Jason Evrard, 33, of Quain Place, Town of Niagara, admitted to a reduced charge of attempted second-degree assault. He faces up to four years in prison when sentenced Jan. 16 by Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr.

The couple was living on Lockport Road in Wheatfield when Evrard hit the woman with two different-sized bats and threatened her with "a medieval sword," Niagara County Assistant District Attorney Lisa M. Baerhe said.

Evrard, who was placed on probation in 2012 for attacking his grandmother's dog and fracturing its pelvis, told Kloch he has a drug problem. Kloch said he would consider a drug treatment sentence.
