Bon-Ton will close at least 40 stores through next year, the company said.
The company has not yet released a list of locations it plans to shutter, so it's not yet clear whether any of Western New York's eight stores will be affected.
The department store has struggled with declining sales and a high debt load. The company lost $135.4 million during the first three quarters of 2017. It also has $350 million in outstanding bond debt, which is being watched closely by credit-rating agencies.
Headquartered in York, Penn., Bon-Ton has 260 locations.
