Tax plan hurts students already burdened with debt
The two tax bills winding their way through the Republican-controlled Congress both have provisions to hurt college students.
One provision would not allow a deduction for student loans; the other would count a tuition waiver for graduate students as taxable income. Both provisions make the financial burden of a college education greater at a time when there is so much agreement that a college education has become too expensive.
We should be increasing tax breaks for college students, not cutting them, especially so that we can fund tax cuts for corporations and the most wealthy.
