Lloyd Taco Factory's Williamsville location will open this week, if all goes as planned.
The second Lloyd restaurant, at 5933 Main St., is set for a grand opening at 11 a.m. Nov. 17.
The 80-seat restaurant will offer a menu much like the original restaurant, at 1503 Hertel Ave. Tacos, burritos, rice bowls and other dishes are ordered at the counter, and picked up when they're ready.
A full bar will add Lloyd's cocktail menu and local draft beer to the festivities.
The restaurant has its certificate of occupancy but needs to have its final inspections before it can open, said Peter Cimino, an owner. That makes the Friday grand opening likely, but not guaranteed.
After some invitation only soft opening hours, the public grand opening starts at 11 a.m. Friday. Festivities will include a DJ, photo booths and giveaways during the dinner hours, Cimino said. The restaurant will be open 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
Craft beer bar closing: Alternative Brews, the area's first bar dedicated to craft beer, will close after 22 years.
The growth of competition in the booming local craft beer industry hasn't helped business, but in the end owner Paul Madsen just wanted to do something else, he said. "It's been 22 and a half years, six or seven days a week," he said.
Plus he got divorced, then met someone he would like to spend more time with. "I'm 58 years old, and it's time to slow down and smell the roses."
The building, at 3466 Sheridan Drive, Amherst, will become a professional office. The last day of business is Dec. 2.
A former Goldome banker, Madsen was traveling to a Batavia beverage store to buy the microbrews he loved decades ago when the store owner mentioned that a bar specializing in such beers should work in Buffalo.
At the time, Sam Adams was available in a few places, maybe Pete's Wicked, but that was it, Madsen recalled.
He started in 1995 with three taps and has grown to 19 over the years.
The last day will include music from High Horse Band, 3-6 p.m., and Big Sauce Trio from 8 p.m.-midnight. They'll be hosting musicians they've played with over the years, Madsen said.
Madsen hopes he doesn’t have to empty kegs down the drain. As part of the last day's festivities, "I'm telling people to bring their growlers Saturday night."
With his closing, and society's trend towards staying home, he hopes people will continue to get out, have a drink and converse with people. "It's been important through the ages, and I hope it doesn’t stop," Madsen said. "Be social, drink local."
Tonawanda hot dogs: Frank Gourmet Hot Dogs will become the latest food truck to add a brick-and-mortar location with its new Tonawanda restaurant.
A former auto repair business at 707 Kenmore Ave. will become Frank Gourmet Hot Dogs' first restaurant. The target date is early 2018.
"We couldn’t be more excited about this location for our first stand-alone restaurant. It is in our backyard, minutes away from where we grew up and just steps away from St. Joe’s," partners Frank and Paul Tripi said in a Facebook post. "It borders many of the communities that have been good to us since day one. Even better, there will be plenty of parking (20 spots) and it is a few blocks from the bike trails."
The Tripis, who started their company in 2013, sell hot dogs made from their own recipe, "free of nitrates, preservatives and artificial ingredients," with standard or adventurous toppings. Its hand-cut French fries, some of the best in town, come with dips like sriracha aioli.
Frank Gourmet Hot Dogs operates two trucks and a counter at EXPO, 617 Main St., the downtown food hall.
Pearl Street Mexican: Senor Tequila opened in September on Pearl Street, offering a familiar lineup of Mexican-American food, margaritas and more than 20 beers on tap.
The restaurant, at 414 Pearl St., is owned by restaurateur Blas Zuniga and Denise Cotto, a former Internal Revenue Service accountant turned Mexican restaurant manager. Zuniga also operates the El Agave restaurant on Union Road in Cheektowaga. (Due to a reporting error, The News previously reported that Saul Sanchez was an owner; that is not the case.)
Burritos, tacos and enchiladas are on offer, as are 30 flavors of margarita.
