WELCOME MAT – More than 30 resident artists at the Buffalo Arts Studio in the Tri-Main Center, 2495 Main St., will kick off their annual exhibit and sale with an open house and reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday. In addition to studio tours, there will be workshops, live music and a cash bar. The exhibit and sale will continue through Dec. 22.

WORDS OF WISDOM – Writer and educator Patricia Ann Filipiak, a second-generation Polish-American, will discuss the secrets and surprises she found when she researched her family roots at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Black Rock Historical Society, 1902 Niagara St. Her talk, the last in the Fall Speaker Series, is free and open to the public.

Gary N. Costello, founder of the Hull House Foundation, will talk about the historic Hull Home and Farmstead, the oldest stone dwelling in Erie County, at 2 p.m. Sunday in a program sponsored by the Lancaster New York Historical Society in the Historical Society Museum, 40 Clark St., Lancaster, around the corner from the Opera House. Admission is free. Refreshments will be served.

OVER 21 ONLY – St. Jude the Apostle Church, 800 Niagara Falls Blvd., North Tonawanda, will host a wine tasting, featuring wines from the Finger Lakes, from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Parish Center. FURRY FRIENDS – Vendors and animal rescue organizations galore will join for the Rally to Rescue Adoption and Pre-Holiday Pet Expo from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in Col J. B. Weber Post 898, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 2909 South Park Ave., Lackawanna. Admission is free.
Attractions include a petting zoo, pony rides, an animal communicator, a Weidner’s chicken barbecue, a cash bar and pet pictures with Santapaws.
