Elections officials hope to finalize sheriff race on Monday

The final tally for Erie County sheriff should be completed on Monday, according to Erie County Board of Elections officials.

About 8,000 absentee ballots will be tabulated during the Monday session, with final results expected the same day, Republican Elections Commissioner Ralph M. Mohr said.

“We should be able to run all 8,000 that day,” he said, “and if it’s not closer that day, it will be pretty much over.”

Republican incumbent Timothy B. Howard claimed victory on Election Night in his bid for a fourth term. While acknowledging Howard’s lead, Democratic challenger Bernard A. Tolbert said he would wait for the absentee ballot count before officially conceding.

Unofficial results compiled on Election Night showed Howard leading by 3,850 votes.
