Orchard Park Police received several phone calls Friday night about an unusual sight on Route 219:
A vehicle was driving down the Route 219 Expressway, dragging a metal light pole behind it.
The calls came in about 9:45 p.m., and Lt. Patrick Fitzgerald caught up with the vehicle on Abbott Road just south of Milestrip. That's where the pole became dislodged and slid across Abbott Road, coming to rest across both lanes of the southbound traffic.
Fitzgerald pursued the vehicle into a parking of the Stadium Mobil Station at Southwestern Boulevard, after the vehicle jumped the curb, drove across the lot and became disabled.
When the driver attempted to leave the the vehicle, he was taken into custody, police said.
Officer Ryan Myers then tried to discover where the pole came from. His investigation revealed that the vehicle struck the 25-foot tall aluminum light pole on Cliff Street in Buffalo while entering the ramp to the I-190. The pole became lodged under the vehicle and the operator drove all the way to Orchard Park.
Raymond P. Duggan, 39, of Hamburg, agreed to a breath test and his blood alcohol content registered 0.13 percent, Orchard Park Police reported.
Duggan was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, possession of an open container, failure to signal, having an unsafe tire and failure to affix a registration sticker.
He was released on bail and is to appear at a later time in Orchard Park Town Court.
