Uniland seeks spring start to Northtown Center hotel, but awaits final approvals

Uniland Development Co. said it hopes to start work in the spring on its 105-room, $11 million hotel at the Northtown Center, after the Amherst Town Board last week granted the rezoning required for the project.

Uniland would build and own a $13 million, four-story Hampton by Hilton hotel at 1615 Amherst Manor Drive, at the ice rink complex off Millersport Highway, and make lease payments to the town.

There are two hurdles remaining: The Planning Board must approve Uniland's project site plan and the governor must sign a bill that exchanges the 3 acres of green space where the hotel would be built for 26.6 acres of town-owned parkland in East Amherst.

The State Legislature passed the legislation this year. If Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo doesn't sign the bill by Dec. 31, lawmakers would have to start the process, known as alienation, over again.
