Work to improve safety along Route 5 and Bayview Road in the Town of Hamburg should be finished by the end of the year, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The Bayview Road access between the westbound and eastbound Route 5, the site of numerous accidents, is being removed after Hoover Road was realigned to meet Lake Erie Boulevard at a four corner intersection with Route 5.
Remaining work on the $1.3 million project includes revision to the traffic signal at the new intersection, including a new signal head, final grading and road striping, and finishing of sidewalks and driveways, according to Susan Surdej, spokeswoman for the DOT.
Landscaping is to be done in the spring, she said.
The accident rate at the Bayview intersection was more than 13 times the statewide rate for similar intersections, according to the state DOT.
