State playoff preview: Akron field hockey

Head coach Mary Borden has Akron in the state semifinals for the first time since taking over the program in 2003.

Awaiting the Tigers at Maine-Endwell High School in the Binghamton area on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. is Section IV’s Whitney Point, which has won the last three Class C state championships. Winner advances to Sunday’s final at 9:30 a.m.

Both teams are coming off dominating regional triumphs, Akron 7-0 over V-East Rochester and Whitney Point 9-1 over IX-Rondout Valley. Seniors Abigail Stone and Rebecca Breymeier both had hat tricks for the Tigers in the Far West Regionals.

There have been four NYSPHSAA field hockey champions from Section VI: Williamsville North in 2010 and 2007, Sweet Home in 2000 and Akron in 1992.
