Fundraiser set to buy K-9 unit dog in honor of fallen officer

A benefit to raise money to purchase  a new dog for the Buffalo Police Department's K-9  unit in honor of fallen Police Officer Craig E. Lehner will be held next week at a downtown nightclub.

Police say they are considering expanding the unit. The cost of a police dog and training ranges from $6,000 to $10,000.

Club Marcella, 439 Pearl St.,  will sponsor the event from 4 to 9 p.m. next Thursday. Donations of $20 include food and the first drink. A 50-50 raffle will be held and a silent auction starts at 8 p.m.

Lehner, a canine officer, died last month in a police dive team training accident in the Niagara River.
