Fishing outings helps veterans' families

Time helps heal. So does a good old-fashioned lower Niagara River fishing outing. Western New York Heroes, a not-for-profit group serving the needs of area veterans and their families, teamed up with Capt. John DeLorenzo of Niagara Falls and Tim Finney of Wheatfield to take out Danielle Nichols and her 9-year old-son Ty last weekend. The two lost their husband/father in a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crash.

This past weekend, Danielle (a retired U.S. Coast Guard aviator herself) and Ty hit the waters of the lower Niagara to pursue trout despite less than ideal conditions. Using chartreuse trout beads fished off a three-way rig, they bounced bottom with the help of DeLorenzo and Finney. Fishing along Artpark and in Devil’s Hole, they managed to catch two steelhead and four lake trout. Danielle caught the biggest steelhead, weighing in at 11 pounds, from the Artpark drift. Catch of the day was Ty’s 40-inch lake trout.
