Bisons put out a call: Who replaces Celery?

We're heading into winter but the promotional machine inside Coca-Cola Field never slows down and the Bisons are rolling out a new question today: Who should be the new racer to replace Celery in the nightly mascot race?

Celery became the, ahem, stalk of the town all summer as it finally earned its long-awaited first victory on Aug. 30 -- after 449 consecutive losses -- in its final race before the team put the character into racing retirement. The Bisons put more than 15,000 fans in the park that night for an otherwise meaningless game and Celery's victory was easily the most memorable moment of the entire season, especially given the way the team collapsed on the field in the second half.

After 449 losses (and extra innings), Celery goes out a winner

While Celery may be done from racing, the WCC Race will go on and the team is looking for suggestions at a replacement. You wonder if the name (which stands for Wing, Cheese, Celery) will also get a makeover. Some obvious suggestions from the team: "Will a certain sandwich become a new weck-ing ball in the competition? Will Wing and Atomic finally be united with their cheesy, sliced companion?"

But while a Beef on Weck or Pizza character might be obvious, the team is taking thoughts from fans as well at the link on its Web site. It's promising more details to come in future weeks, likely some sort of giveaway to a fan with a great idea.
