West Seneca students aid victims of Hurricane Maria

File this under "great minds think alike."

West Seneca West Elementary fifth-grader Gabriella Wysocki and Mary Lou Dietrich of West Seneca Food Pantry both wanted to help victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

Dietrich contacted the five elementary schools in the West Seneca district, as well as St. John Vianney and Queen of Heaven schools to see if they could collect personal care items like toothbrushes, diapers, food and more.

Meanwhile, Gabriella had emailed her principal to see if her school could help out. In about a week, the schools had filled a U-Haul.

Gabriella said students put themselves in the position of the victims.

“How would you feel if everything was gone and destroyed? It was a really good deed," she said.
