A Jamestown nonprofit has a shot at a $10,000 grand prize in a contest sponsored by M&T Bank, and the public can help it win.
Community Helping Hands is one of five community groups that were named finalists in M&T Bank's first "Understanding What's Important Business Challenge." The five were chosen from nearly 500 submissions, nominated by businesses.
Community Helping Hands, which was nominated by Trinity Guitars, is the only finalist from Western New York. It says it would use the $10,000 to support a newly created workforce development program. The organization says it meets emergency needs for clothing, household items and furniture, and provides job training for those on public assistance.
The vote total will account for part of the total score used to determine the overall winner. The contest will also take into account why the organization was important to the nominator, the involvement of the nominator or the nominator's business in the organization, and the impact of the prize money on the nominee.
The grand prize winner gets $10,000, while the other four finalists will each receive $1,000. Voting continues until noon on Nov. 22. M&T will announce the winner on Nov. 28.
