What to watch for Thursday
1. Girls volleyball - Section VI Class AA & A finals at Daemen College
Winners advance to the Far West Regionals next Thursday and Friday at Daemen.
Class AA: 1-Clarence vs. 3-Lancaster, 6 p.m.
This is a rematch of last year's final. The Red Devils lost the first two sets to Williamsville North on Monday, but stormed back to win the last three to get a shot at their fourth sectional title in a row. They swept Lancaster in ECIC I play with four-set and three-set wins. The Legends won the second, fourth and fifth sets at No. 2 Orchard Park on Monday.
Class A: 1-Williamsville East vs. 2-Niagara Wheatfield, 8 p.m.
The Flames and Falcons are both playing their best volleyball of the season having swept all three of their opponents on the way to today's final. East is looking for its fourth straight sectional title.
2. Girls volleyball - Section VI Class C finals at Brocton
Winners advance to the the overall Class C final next Monday at Daemen College.
Class C-1: 1-Akron vs. 2-Eden, 6 p.m.
The Raiders have won 18 straight Section VI titles and 21 in the last 22 years. Akron is led by junior Darion Jonothon. Neither team has lost a set this postseason.
Class C-2: 1-Cassadaga Valley vs. 2-Portville, 8 p.m.
Portville swept Cassadaga Valley in this game last season. Both teams swept their opponents in the quarter and semifinals.
3. Girls swimming - All-Catholic Championships, Section VI diving finals
The championships of the Monsignor Martin High School Athletic Association start at 6 p.m. at ECC's Flickinger Center. Sacred Heart dethroned Nardin last year for its first team title since 1991.
The diving championships for Section VI are at Maryvale at 5 p.m. Juniors Rachel Henning (Eden), Abi Lisciandro (Panama) and Carissa Jantzi (Orchard Park) are among the highest-scoring divers heading in.
4. Gymnastics - Section VI Championships
The best in area gymnastics compete at Clarence High School starting at 4 p.m. for the right to be called sectional champions.
Williamsville North won the team title last year, while Spartans junior Zoe Kyriakopoulos after repeating as the all-around champion by finishing first on the floor, vault and bars.
Williamsville South's Gabby Gare is the current Section VI leader in vault, floor, bars and all-around, while Lancaster's Makenzie Castiglione is the current leaders on beam.
