Glushefski is the best choice for Erie County comptroller
I was completely baffled after reading The News’ endorsement of Stefan Mychajliw for Erie County comptroller. The first sentence of the endorsement literally reads, “Stefan Mychajliw hasn’t been a particularly good comptroller for Erie County.” It goes on to detail his “troubling” conflicts of interest and political grandstanding. Somehow, that list of grievances was followed by an official endorsement from the editorial board.
As Buffalo’s only major daily newspaper, The News has a responsibility to grant endorsements in a thoughtful manner. This endorsement was laughably thoughtless.
The job of a comptroller is, essentially, to be the chief accounting officer for our county. Vanessa Glushefski is a certified public accountant and an attorney. I couldn’t imagine better credentials for the job. Mychajliw, on the other hand, has no accounting experience to speak of. The News’ endorsement of Mychajliw seemed to be purely based on his party affiliation; he is a Republican, while the county executive is a Democrat. While providing a “check” on our government is important, to be sure, it should certainly not be weighed more heavily than the necessary experience for the job.
I sure hope Erie County residents were as baffled as I was after reading the endorsement, and join me in voting for Glushefski, the only qualified candidate for comptroller on Nov. 7.
