Canisius hockey's McLaughlin named player of the month, Schmelzer up for national award

Canisius hockey forward Dylan McLaughlin has been named the Atlantic Hockey Conference's Player of the Month for October.

The Lancaster native scored three goals and added five assists during the Golden Griffins' five-game homestand to begin his junior season. McLaughlin had four multi-point games, as Canisius went 2-1-1 in those contests.

He currently leads the conference in points per game with 1.6 and trails scoring leader Dominic Franco of Army West Point by one point.

Canisius (2-2-1, 2-2-0 AHC) visits Sacred Heart in Connecticut this weekend for a two-game series Nov. 4 and 5.

Senior teammate and Williamsville native Ryan Schmelzer has been named one of 20 candidates for the 2017-18 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

The field will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballet. The winner will be announced during the 2018 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four in April.
