Local Sea Grant office co-authors new report on Asian carp

A detailed report about the life history, behaviors and ecosystem impacts by four species of the invasive Asian carp was released Monday by the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network.

Helen Domske, New York Sea Grant's coastal education specialist at the University at Buffalo, is one of four experts from New York who helped develop the Asian carp education and outreach report.

Great Lakes advocates and federal and state agencies are in an all-hands-on-deck effort to stop the invasive fish, which have colonized the nearby Mississippi River basin, from reaching the Great Lakes.

"Asian carp pose a real threat to the ecosystem health of the Great Lakes," Domske said. "This report provides valuable information including biology, management and educational resources to help concerned citizens learn more about these unwanted fish."
